In 2019, writer Michael Harriot coined the term “Blackfamous”: the gap between black stardom and white anonymity. In his words, “The highest possible rating on the 'Blackfamous' scale would be someone EVERY black person knew but was unknown by EVERY white person.”
For legendary Tinseltown title The Hollywood Reporter, ‘Blackfamous’ became the central concept of its February 11 edition, commemorating Black History Month. And it featured the work of not one, but two Different Folk artists.
Johannesburg-based Hust Wilson’s trademark stencil lettering stands proud and powerful on the prestigious front cover.
The cover feature itself – a roundtable discussion with actors Larenz Tate, Loretta Devine, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Lynn Whitfield and Wendy Raquel Robinson – was designed by Maxime Manga: photography manipulated into higher art via digital collage and geometric patterns.
