Yay Abe (AKA Russel Abrahams) was commissioned to light up the pages of Ode to Hip-Hop: 50 Albums That Define 50 Years of Trailblazing Music. Think illustrations of hip-hop royalty for the genre’s golden jubilee, from Run-D.M.C. to Cardi B, Yay-style.
“Russel did such an amazing job capturing every era, from the party scenes to the depictions of fashion,” says Kiana Fitzgerald, the tome’s author. “They’re absolutely phenomenal. Words can't express how pleased I am with how this book turned out.”
Here’s to the next 50 years. Alongside the guidebook, Yay’s work is featured on an accompanying trivia deck – both include a portrait of his favourite artist, Kendrick Lamar.
